it all goes sideways the moment somebody smells honey…
Down at the sunny pond, Pippin was doing the thing he loved best in all the world. He stood on his favorite lily pad, lifted his big brass trumpet to the warm blue sky, and played.
One
And here is a thing Webster never knew: out here, Pippin had fans. Sproot the snail, sleepy Tuck the turtle, Hopkins the bunny, Carl the squirrel, and a whole family of mice called the Pips gathered round the pond, swaying and clapping along, and Eugene the eagle watched over them from up high. They all thought Pippin was the finest trumpet player in the whole garden. (They were right.)
Two
But right in the middle of his very best song, something drifted across the pond and tickled Pippin’s nose. Something warm. Something sweet. Something golden. His trumpet went quiet. “…Is that honey?”

Down at the warm green pond, the rain had just blown through, and everything sparkled. And ambling home along the water’s edge, slow and steady as always, came Tuck, the oldest, sleepiest turtle in the whole garden.
One
Tuck was so old and so slow that a little garden grew right on his back: soft moss and three white daisies that nodded as he walked. He had lived by that pond a very, very long time. And he knew every inch of it by heart.
Two
Best of all, Tuck had a secret shortcut. Right under the roots of the big old tree there was a snug little gap, just turtle-sized, and he had squeezed through it to get home since he was a tiny thing. “Same as always,” he hummed, and headed straight for it.

The sun had barely gone down when the laughing began. Down the lane came little humans in costumes, giggling and swinging bright buckets, their shoes crunching the amber leaves. Down in the garden, every head looked up at once. “Everybody!” shouted Carl the squirrel. “Come look, come look, come LOOK!”
One
The friends crowded along the fence to see. A tiny witch skipped past. A small dinosaur roared a very small roar. A little ghost in a white sheet waved at nobody at all. And up on the porch of the big house sat a row of fat orange pumpkins. “What IS all this?” whispered Hopkins.
Two
Then night settled in for real. And one of those pumpkins DID something. It flickered. It glowed. It grinned a great golden grin! The children marched right up to the door, knocked, and shouted all together: “TRICK OR TREAT!” “MONSTERS!” squeaked the Pips, diving into a flowerpot. One Pip did not fit. He held his breath instead.
